Prologue
Early into the morning hours, even pre sunrise, the final body was lifted carefully from the grave. Gil stood inside the deep hole, his eyes studying the buglife he had lifted from the corpses to place in small separate containers.
“We got six bodies over here and you’re interested in the bugs.”
Gil lifted an eyebrow and looked back to Warrick. “Don’t belittle the importance of these little guys. They’ll give us timelines we otherwise wouldn’t have.”
Warrick nodded, running his hands down his face tiredly. “So will the autopsy.”
“Nature’s timeline is more accurate.” Gil commented dryly as he began loading the insect filled containers into a small box for transport.
“We got company.”
Gil looked to Warrick and followed the direction of his gaze to a bare tree covered with birds. “We just took their food. They’re probably angry with us.”
“Yeah I’m having flashbacks of ‘The Birds’.”
“Hitchcock?” At Warricks nod, Gil continued. “There aren’t enough of them to start acting as a pack and out here they have more than enough to feed on which squashes most aggressive tendencies in any species. Most wildlife won’t attack unless out of necessity or if they feel threatened.” He snapped the box shut. “The autopsies won’t begin until the dayshift starts. You should get a nap in.”
“What about you, Griss?”
Gil climbed the ladder out of the large dirt hole and lifted the box filled with his newly discovered specimens. “I’m going to make sure these guys get back to the lab. I have my own autopsies to perform.”
Warrick smirked and started up the ladder. “We’re filthy and tired and you’re entirely too excited about those bugs. I’m gonna use the showers at the lab and then I’ll meet up with you.”
“You won’t be disappointed.” Gil started towards his Tahoe to load up his kit and retrieved evidence. “Bring coffee!”
“You got it. I’m bringing the heavy stuff. We won’t sleep for a week.” Warrick joked, loading his own equipment.

Gil walked into the lab, carrying the insect filled box carefully in both hands. He was covered in dirt and really could care less about the fact. Where his specialty was concerned, he could be one-track minded and he fully admitted to that.
“New pets?”
Gil slowed his pace just barely as Doc Robbins joined him. “Research. Just getting off work? How did Catherine do?”
“She did fine leading the team during your absence from what I could tell. What’s the final headcount on this case?” Doc asked, following Gil into the evidence room.
“Six. And I guess we’re working with the daytime coroner?” Gil set the box down and leaned over to inspect the insects to make sure they were okay.
“Six… I’m almost tempted to work a double… almost.” Doc grinned. “You should take a shower.”
“These guys won’t live very long outside of their environment without proper care.”
Doc tilted his head, studying the bugs. “You’re going to cut into most of them anyway, aren’t you?”
Gil narrowed his eyes. “For the sake of the case, yes… but-“
“Go shower, Gil. I don’t mind telling you that you smell. I’ll watch over your bugs until you get back.” Doc assured the scientist, even sitting on one of the stools to prove to him that he would indeed wait.
After several moments consideration, Gil nodded. “No one touches them.”
Doc lifted a hand. “Scouts honor.”
“Wrong hand.” After Doc made the correction, Gil tilted his head and nodded. “Give me ten minutes.”
“I’ll give you twelve so that you can clean behind the ears. You know most people don’t wash behind their ears? It’s disgusting. If I had a nickel for every corpse that I-“ Doc paused and nodded as he lifted a hand in apology. “Go.”
“Cleanliness is next to godliness?” Gil asked amusedly as he started out of the room.
Doc chuckled lightly. “Yes, but godliness doesn’t always keep you alive.”

OOC: So, I’m trying something new. This will be an ongoing case with Gil. I am going to attempt to continue to write it to its completion. The prompts from the communities I write for will help guide the case along different paths. I think it will be fun. I know that I often start the opening of cases and leave them hanging with Gil’s quips much like the opening to most CSI Las Vegas episodes. Hopefully I can accomplish this goal just for the fun of having a finished case. Please read the linked previous parts with this and it will make more sense. We’ll see how it goes and wish me luck!
